Wombat Farts: The Unique Digestive System of the Cube-Poop Producer
Wombats are the only animals in the world that produce cubic feces — a phenomenon scientists only fully explained in 2021. Their digestive system is an extreme solution for Australia's tough scrubland: slow, thorough, and highly efficient. The byproduct of all this — intestinal gas — is the expression of one of the most unusual fermentation processes in the animal kingdom.
Cubic Poop: The Anatomy of a Mystery
Wombat feces are cube-shaped — a fact that was long treated as a zoological curiosity until researchers at Georgia Tech University found the explanation in 2021. The final 8% of a wombat's intestine has non-uniform elasticity: certain sections of the intestinal wall are stiffer than others. This variation in wall elasticity mechanically shapes the feces into cube-like forms — a mechanism unique in the entire animal kingdom. The research team received the 2019 Ig Nobel Prize for Physics for their discovery (for research that 'first makes you laugh, then makes you think'). The functional significance: cubic feces don't roll — wombats use them to mark territory on rocks and tree stumps, and the stable shape keeps the markings in place.
Slow Digestion, Intense Fermentation
Wombats eat mainly tough, nutrient-poor grass, roots, and bark — food that most animals could barely digest. Their digestive system compensates for low nutrient density with extreme retention time: food spends up to 22 days in a wombat's digestive tract — compared to 24 to 72 hours for humans. This extremely long retention time is ideal for fermentation: gut bacteria have maximum time to break down cellulose and produce short-chain fatty acids. That generates significant amounts of intestinal gas — mainly CO₂, methane, and hydrogen. Wombats actually fart quite a lot, even for their size. An adult wombat weighs 45 to 75 lbs (20 to 35 kg) and produces 80 to 100 fecal pellets per night — an indicator of the intensity of fermentation.
The Gut Microbiome: Specialists for Tough Feed
The wombat's gut microbiome is adapted to nutrient-poor Australian vegetation and differs substantially from that of related marsupials such as kangaroos. Dominant bacterial strains specialize in cellulose breakdown — similar to ruminants, but in a different phylogenetic composition. The comparison with koalas is instructive: both live on nutrient-poor Australian plants, but use different digestive strategies. Koalas also have an extremely long cecum for fermentation, and produce soft 'pap' feces to pass gut microbiome to joeys. Wombats lack this pap phase — their young develop their own microbiome. Wombat methane production relative to body size is lower than that of cattle, but higher than most small mammals.

The wombat's digestive system is the subject of serious biomedical and materials science research. The mechanism behind cubic feces — non-uniform wall elasticity as a shaping principle — could be relevant for manufacturing cube-shaped objects in industry: conventional methods use external molds, while wombats use intrinsic wall properties.
