Elephants and Their Epic Flatulence

A fully grown African elephant eats up to 200 kilograms of plant material daily and drinks 150 liters of water. What comes out the other end is — to put it mildly — impressive. Elephant flatulence is legendary among zookeepers: loud, frequent, and on a scale that regularly astonishes visitors. But behind the humor lies fascinating biology — and a surprising climate relevance.

The Elephant Gut: A Fermentation Factory

Elephants are hindgut fermenters — unlike ruminants like cows that pre-digest food in the stomach, in elephants the main fermentation takes place in the cecum and colon. The elephant's intestinal tract can reach a total length of 35 meters and provides a huge fermentation surface. Gut bacteria break down cellulose- and lignin-rich plant fibers — a process that produces enormous amounts of hydrogen, methane, and CO₂. Estimates suggest a fully grown elephant produces several hundred liters of intestinal gas daily — for comparison: a human produces 0.5 to 1.5 liters. Zookeepers report that after a generous meal with particularly fermentation-happy foods like fruits, the acoustic and olfactory performance can be impressive.

Climate Relevance: Are Elephants a Methane Source?

The question of whether elephants make a notable contribution to atmospheric methane has occupied researchers. Unlike cattle — kept in billions worldwide — there are estimated to be only 400,000 to 500,000 elephants in Africa and about 40,000 in Asia. Their absolute methane emissions are therefore globally barely relevant. Prehistorically this may have been different: when mammoths and other proboscideans roamed North America and Eurasia in massive herds, their gut gases may have made a measurable contribution to the atmosphere. Some researchers speculate that the extinction of megafauna at the end of the last ice age may have slightly reduced atmospheric methane content — an indirect climate effect of human hunting.

Acoustics and Smell: What Zookeepers Report

Anyone who has ever stood near a farting elephant won't forget it. The acoustic range is impressive: from deep, resonant rumbles to whistling, high-frequency releases that sound like a tire losing air. The sound is produced by the vibration of the sphincter muscles — similar to humans, but magnified by orders of magnitude. The smell, according to zookeeper reports, is 'overwhelmingly plant-like and musty' and significantly less unpleasant than human or carnivore gases, because elephants are herbivores and produce barely any sulfur compounds. Gas releases occur spontaneously and frequently — according to one observational study, on average every 20–40 minutes.

Elephant Flatulence as a Research Subject

Elephant gut gases are surprisingly well researched because zoo elephants are easily accessible. Studies have shown that elephant microbiomes are significantly differently composed from human or bovine ones. Particularly interesting: elephant microbiomes differ considerably between wild and captive animals — zoo elephants have a less diverse microbiome, which may be associated with health problems. Gas production also serves researchers as a proxy for digestive health: changes in gas quantity or composition can indicate diseases, stress states, or nutritional problems.

At Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, keepers reported that a particularly large bull produced such intense flatulence after eating fermented fruit that visitors in a nearby group mistook the acoustic performance for a faulty ventilation system and filed complaints with security. Security responded — and found: everything normal, just an elephant.
