Hippo Farts: The Gassy Truth About Africa's River Giants

Hippos are notorious for the explosive mess they fling with their tails, but what about the gas brewing inside these two-tonne herbivores? The real story of hippopotamus flatulence is stranger and more scientific than the internet myths suggest.

A Surprisingly Complex Gut

Despite looking like giant pigs, hippopotamuses are pseudoruminants: they possess a large, multi-chambered stomach where symbiotic microbes ferment tough aquatic and terrestrial plants. Unlike true ruminants such as cattle, hippos do not chew cud, yet their foregut fermentation still breaks down cellulose over many hours. This slow microbial digestion inevitably produces gases, chiefly carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen, as bacteria feast on the roughly forty kilograms of grass a hippo grazes each night. Because their digestive tract is enormous and their meals are fibrous, hippos generate a steady internal supply of fermentation gas. Much of it is belched or absorbed, but a share exits as flatulence. Their unusual anatomy makes them a fascinating case study in how non-cattle herbivores process a demanding plant-based diet.

The Tail-Wagging Myth

The most viral 'hippo fart' videos actually show something else entirely. When a dominant male hippo defecates, it spins its short, paddle-like tail rapidly to scatter dung across a wide area, a behaviour called muck-spreading or dung-showering. This flings faeces onto reeds, rivals and riverbanks to mark territory and signal status to other hippos. Observers often mistake the spray and the accompanying noises for a colossal fart, but it is primarily defecation combined with a scent-marking display, not gas expulsion. Real hippo flatulence does occur, of course, and can be audible, especially underwater where bubbles rise conspicuously. Still, the famous tail-helicopter spectacle is a communication ritual rooted in territorial behaviour, not the gassy blast that memes claim it to be.

Methane, Climate and Herbivore Gas

Like other large herbivores, hippos release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, through both flatulence and belching. Researchers who have studied hippo digestion found they produce less methane per kilogram of body mass than cattle, partly because their foregut fermentation is comparatively efficient and their metabolism is slow. Even so, with populations concentrated along African rivers and lakes, their collective gas output contributes to local carbon and nutrient cycling. Intriguingly, hippos transport huge quantities of nutrients from land into water via their dung, fertilising aquatic ecosystems and feeding fish and insects. Their gassy, messy digestion is therefore ecologically important, linking grassland grazing to river chemistry. Understanding herbivore methane, including that of hippos, helps scientists model how wild animals influence the planet's greenhouse gas budget.

Underwater Farts and Behaviour

Hippos spend up to sixteen hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep cool and protect their skin from the sun. This aquatic lifestyle means much of their flatulence happens underwater, where escaping gas forms visible bubbles rather than the airborne sound people expect. Zookeepers and researchers report that captive hippos can be remarkably flatulent, particularly after feeding, and the noises can echo around enclosures. Because hippos are among the most dangerous large animals in Africa, closely observing their digestive behaviour in the wild is difficult and sometimes hazardous. Much of what we know comes from zoos, where diets are controlled and animals can be monitored safely. From bubbling lagoons to booming enclosures, the hippo's gassy reputation is well earned, even if the viral videos usually show dung, not wind.
