Why Do Other People's Farts Smell Worse?
Hardly anyone finds their own fart genuinely unpleasant — but the fart of the person sitting next to you on the subway can trigger a physical aversion response. This universal phenomenon has both a chemical and a psychological explanation. The perception of odors is not an objective measurement process; it is a highly context-dependent, learned, and emotionally colored experience — and our own body enjoys a remarkable trust advantage in this regard.
Olfactory Adaptation: The Brain Filters Out Familiar Smells
The nervous system is designed to ignore constant stimuli — a principle called sensory adaptation. The olfactory system adapts particularly quickly: after just a few minutes of continuous exposure to a smell, the perceived intensity drops significantly, even if the concentration of odor molecules remains unchanged. Our own body odor is the most extreme example of this adaptation: we are permanently exposed to it and have grown so accustomed to it that under normal circumstances we no longer perceive it at all. Our own fart smell is therefore not an exception — it is the result of a lifetime of olfactory habituation to the odor profile of our own microbiome.
Microbiome Individuality: Everyone Smells Different
The composition of intestinal gas is as individual as a fingerprint. Different gut microbiomes produce different quantities and ratios of sulfur compounds: hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), methanethiol, and carbonyl sulfide are produced in proportions characteristic for each person. This means that your own fart smells like the products of your own microbiome — a profile that the brain recognizes and has catalogued to some degree as familiar. Someone else's fart, by contrast, contains an unknown sulfur compound profile that is processed as a novel threat. Studies on odor identification show that people can reliably identify their own body odor from a mixture — evidence of the deep neurological encoding of one's own odor profile.
The Psychology of Disgust: Self vs. Other
Evolutionary psychologist Paul Rozin of the University of Pennsylvania, widely considered the leading expert on disgust, has demonstrated in a series of studies that people find their own bodily excretions significantly less repulsive than those of others — even if the chemical composition were identical. In a classic experiment, participants rated the smell of their own used underwear as significantly less unpleasant than that of a stranger's. Rozin interprets this as an evolutionary protective mechanism: someone else's bodily excretions signal potential pathogen exposure — one's own material is known and has already been categorized as safe.
Social Contexts and Double Standards
The intensity of the disgust response to someone else's fart is context-dependent. A partner's fart is rated significantly more tolerantly than a stranger's — but still more unpleasant than one's own. A study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology showed that perceived social distance from the farting person directly correlates with reported odor intensity: the more unfamiliar the person, the worse the smell seems, at equal actual concentration. This phenomenon is a form of social priming: the brain modulates odor perception through social context information even before conscious evaluation takes place.
