Vegan Diet and Flatulence

The vegan diet is one of the fastest-growing dietary patterns in the world — and one of the most gas-intensive, at least during the transition phase. Anyone switching from a meat-heavy Western diet to a plant-based diet often experiences a marked increase in gas production during the first few weeks. This is not a sign that something is going wrong — it is biology. The gut microbiome needs time to adjust to the new substrates, and this adaptation phase comes with considerable fermentation activity.

FODMAPs: The Plant-Based Gas Sources

FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) are short-chain carbohydrates that the human small intestine cannot fully absorb and that are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine. Plant foods that are central to a vegan diet are often high in FODMAPs: legumes and beans (oligosaccharides such as raffinose and stachyose), onions and garlic (fructans), cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage (fructans and galactooligosaccharides), and many fruits (fructose, sorbitol). These compounds are not harmful — on the contrary: the short-chain fatty acids produced during their fermentation are important for gut health. The gas is, in a sense, the price of adequate fiber intake.

The Microbiome Adapts: The Transition Phase

When switching abruptly to a vegan diet, the gut microbiome initially lacks the bacterial strains that ferment plant fibers most efficiently. The existing microbiota attempts to process the new substrates but produces more gas in the process, since efficiency is still low. Studies show that the microbiome changes significantly within two to eight weeks of a consistent dietary switch: fiber-fermenting strains such as Prevotella, Roseburia, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii increase, while strains associated with meat diets decline. After this adaptation phase, most vegans report a normalization — some even experience less flatulence than in their omnivore days.

Vegan vs. Omnivore Farts: Quantity and Quality

Vegan farts often have higher gas volume but smell less on average — a finding that is well explained by biochemistry. Animal proteins, especially meat, supply sulfur-containing amino acids such as cysteine and methionine. These are broken down in the gut into hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and other mercaptans — the main culprits behind unpleasant odor. A plant-based diet with less animal protein produces fewer of these sulfur compounds. The result: more gas, but less smell. Vegetarian and vegan diets are associated with lower H₂S concentrations in intestinal gases — a finding that, ironically, means the louder fart is often the less offensive one.

Strategies for a Smoother Transition Phase

The gas-heavy transition phase can be mitigated. A gradual switch over several weeks gives the microbiome more time to adapt than an abrupt change. Soaking and cooking legumes significantly reduces oligosaccharide content — the soaking water contains most of the gas-forming substances and should be discarded. Fermented products such as tempeh, miso, and sauerkraut contain pre-fermented carbohydrates and are often better tolerated.
