Spicy Food and Gas: Does Chili Really Make You Fart?

The burning sensation of spicy food comes from capsaicin, the active compound in chili peppers. Capsaicin binds to a receptor called TRPV1, the very same receptor that detects genuine heat and physical pain. Your mouth, stomach, and intestines are all lined with TRPV1 receptors, which is why a spicy meal can produce sensations from your lips all the way through your digestive tract. When capsaicin activates these receptors in the gut, it triggers a cascade of responses: increased secretion of digestive fluids, stimulated nerve endings, and accelerated muscular contractions known as peristalsis. This heightened activity moves food through the intestines faster than usual. The characteristic rotten-egg odor of flatulence comes largely from hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur-containing compounds. Staying well hydrated helps keep intestinal transit smooth rather than chaotic. People who are prone to gas might limit the classic gas-producing sidekicks — beans, onions, and garlic — when eating an already fiery meal. And because stress and rushed eating increase swallowed air, simply slowing down at the table can make a surprising difference.
