Mammals fart — that's well known. Fish fart — we've documented that. But what about reptiles? Snakes, turtles, crocodiles, and lizards share basic digestive principles with mammals, but their physiology differs considerably. Snakes: Farting as a Defense Strategy
Yes, snakes fart — and some do it as a defense mechanism. The most well-known fart-specialized snake is the Western hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus) from North America. It has a unique defense repertoire: when playing dead isn't enough, it presses loud, fluttering farts to startle predators. The sounds are produced by controlled contraction of the cloacal muscles. Other snake species use the release of cloacal secretions combined with gas as a chemical defense mechanism — the smell is explicitly designed to deter predators. In most snakes, gas production is otherwise unremarkable: bacterial fermentation in the digestive tract produces gas that is released during defecation or in between.
Turtles: Slow Digestion, Unique Gas Chemistry
Turtles have an unusually long digestive tract relative to their body size, and their digestion runs extremely slowly — in some species it takes weeks for a meal to be fully digested. This long retention time gives gut bacteria a great deal of time for fermentation, theoretically producing considerable gas amounts. Particularly interesting: aquatic turtles can according to some studies partly regulate gas resorption via the cloaca — and during cool temperatures (hibernation) even absorb oxygen through the cloaca, a process called 'cloacal respiration'. Whether turtles 'fart' in any meaningful sense therefore depends on how one defines farting: yes, they release gases — but the process is regulated differently than in mammals.
Crocodiles and Monitor Lizards: Do Apex Predators Fart?
Crocodiles digest prey holistically — bones, skin, and all — with one of the strongest stomach acids in the animal kingdom (pH 1–2). This efficient digestion leaves little undigested material for gut bacteria to ferment, meaning crocodiles produce relatively little gut gas. Monitor lizards like the Komodo dragon have a similarly efficient digestive apparatus. Nevertheless, residual gas always forms, and it is released via the cloaca. In crocodiles, gas release has been observed while basking — presumably because warmer temperatures increase bacterial activity in the gut.
What Reptile Farts Reveal About Evolution
Comparative studies on gut gases in reptiles, birds, and mammals help understand the evolution of the gut microbiome. Birds — the closest living relatives of dinosaurs — barely fart, because their digestive tract is extremely short and optimized for efficiency. This may explain why flying animals generally produce little gut gas: weight and lift are critical. Snakes and other reptiles lie evolutionarily between fish and mammals — their gut microbiome is significantly less diverse than that of mammals, but produces interesting analogous patterns. Paleobiologists are investigating whether comparisons with living reptiles can shed light on the flatulence potential of extinct groups like dinosaurs.
