Sheep Farts: Wool, Methane, and the Climate Puzzle

Sheep are gentle grazers with an outsized role in the planet's greenhouse-gas ledger. Their four-chambered stomachs turn grass into energy — and into methane, a gas far more potent than carbon dioxide. Scientists are now breeding sheep that belch and fart less, turning the humble ewe into an unlikely climate hero.

Do Sheep Actually Fart? Burps Versus Farts in Ruminants

Sheep are ruminants, meaning they digest fibrous plants in a four-chambered stomach dominated by the rumen, a huge fermentation vat teeming with microbes. As bacteria, protozoa and specialised archaea break down cellulose, they release hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which methane-producing microbes called methanogens combine into methane. The surprising truth is that most of this methane leaves the animal not from the rear but from the mouth: roughly 90 to 95 percent is belched out in a process called eructation. Genuine flatulence — gas expelled from the hindgut — accounts for only a small fraction, produced by a second round of fermentation in the large intestine. So while sheep certainly do fart, their reputation as methane machines rests overwhelmingly on their burping. Both routes, however, release the same climate-warming gas, which is why researchers measure a sheep's total methane output rather than fussing over which end it exits.

Sheep and the Global Methane Budget

There are more than a billion sheep on Earth, and collectively they are a meaningful source of agricultural methane. A single adult sheep produces roughly eight to twelve kilograms of methane per year — far less than a dairy cow's eighty to one hundred and twenty kilograms, but multiplied across vast flocks it adds up. In pastoral nations the arithmetic becomes striking: New Zealand has around five sheep for every person, and agriculture accounts for nearly half of the country's greenhouse-gas emissions, with enteric methane the single largest slice. Methane is a short-lived but powerful gas, trapping roughly twenty-eight times more heat than carbon dioxide over a century and far more over shorter periods. Because it breaks down within about a decade, cutting livestock methane offers one of the fastest available levers for slowing near-term warming, which is precisely why sheep have drawn scientific attention.

Breeding Low-Emission Sheep: New Zealand's Experiment

One of the most promising discoveries is that methane output is partly heritable. Researchers at New Zealand's AgResearch measured thousands of sheep in sealed respiration chambers and found that some animals consistently emit far less methane than others eating the same feed — a trait passed to their offspring. By selectively breeding low-emitting rams, scientists have produced flocks whose methane yield is measurably reduced without harming growth, wool or fertility. Low-methane sheep tend to have smaller rumens that pass feed through more quickly, shifting the microbial balance away from methanogens. Beyond genetics, feed additives show dramatic effects: the red seaweed Asparagopsis and the synthetic compound 3-nitrooxypropanol can slash methane by inhibiting the enzyme methanogens rely on. Experimental methane vaccines, designed to prime a sheep's immune system against rumen methanogens, are also under active development.

Wool, Digestion, and the Sheep Gut Microbiome

A sheep's methane signature is written into its gut microbiome — the community of bacteria, protozoa, fungi and archaea living in the rumen. Diet shapes this ecosystem profoundly: lush spring grass, dry hay, clover and grain each feed different microbes and yield different amounts of gas. Highly digestible, energy-rich feeds generally produce less methane per unit of nutrition, while coarse, fibrous forage produces more. Measuring these emissions is a science in itself. Respiration chambers offer the gold standard, enclosing an animal to capture every exhaled breath, while portable GreenFeed units and the sulphur-hexafluoride tracer technique let researchers estimate methane from grazing sheep in the field. Understanding how wool-bearing ruminants convert humble pasture into energy — and gas — is helping farmers feed flocks more efficiently while shrinking their climate hoofprint.
