The Keto Diet and Gas: Why Ketogenic Eating Changes Your Flatulence

The ketogenic diet slashes carbohydrates and floods the plate with fat, and your digestive tract notices the change immediately. Many newcomers report a surprising surge in flatulence affectionately nicknamed "keto farts."

What Happens to Your Gas on Keto

Switching to a ketogenic diet means cutting carbohydrates to roughly 5–10 percent of daily calories while fat climbs to 70 percent or more. This is a dramatic macronutrient shift, and the gut rarely adapts overnight. In the first days and weeks, people often notice more frequent flatulence, bloating and changes in stool. Part of the reason is that the digestive system must suddenly process large quantities of fat, which slows gastric emptying and gives bacteria more time to act on undigested material. At the same time, many keto dieters lean on nuts, seeds, low-carb vegetables, cheese and sugar-free products, all of which can generate gas. The body is essentially rebuilding its digestion around a new fuel source, and extra wind is a common, usually temporary side effect of that transition.

Fat, Bile and Sugar Alcohols

Fat is harder to digest than carbohydrate, and a sudden high-fat load can overwhelm the body's supply of bile and pancreatic lipase, the tools it uses to break lipids down. When fat is incompletely absorbed, it travels further into the colon where gut bacteria ferment it, producing gas and sometimes loose, greasy stools known as steatorrhea. Keto-branded snacks add another twist: many are sweetened with sugar alcohols such as erythritol, maltitol, xylitol and sorbitol. These polyols resist absorption in the small intestine and are famously fermentable, drawing water into the bowel and feeding gas-producing microbes. Maltitol is a particular offender. So a protein bar marketed as keto-friendly can quietly become one of the biggest flatulence triggers in an otherwise clean low-carb diet.

How the Gut Microbiome Adapts

Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, and their population reflects what you feed them. A traditional diet rich in fibre supports bacteria that ferment plant carbohydrates and produce mostly odourless hydrogen and carbon dioxide. When keto strips out grains, fruit and starchy vegetables, those fibre-loving species decline while microbes that thrive on fat and protein gain ground. Protein reaching the colon is broken down by putrefactive bacteria that release sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, the gas responsible for the classic rotten-egg smell. This is why keto farts are often described as less frequent over time but noticeably more pungent. The microbiome usually settles into a new equilibrium after a few weeks, and total gas volume tends to fall as fermentation-heavy fibre stays low.

Managing Keto-Related Flatulence

Most keto gas is a passing phase, but a few habits ease the transition. Easing into the diet over a couple of weeks, rather than switching overnight, gives bile production and the microbiome time to adjust. Staying well hydrated and replacing electrolytes helps digestion and counters the constipation that low fibre can cause. Choosing low-FODMAP vegetables, adding a modest amount of tolerable fibre such as chia or flax, and limiting sugar-alcohol "keto treats" all cut fermentation. Some people benefit from digestive enzymes or ox-bile supplements that support fat breakdown, and eating slowly reduces swallowed air. If severe gas, pain or fatty stools persist for more than a month, it is worth checking with a clinician to rule out fat malabsorption or other underlying issues.
