The Fart as a Weapon: Biology, History and Absurdity
The idea of using flatulence as a weapon sounds like schoolyard humour — but it has surprisingly serious precedents in history, biology, and even modern military research. From the ancient historian Josephus to the bombardier beetle, from medieval pictorial satire to military biogas concepts: the fart as a means of power has occupied humanity for centuries.
Josephus and the Fart That Triggered an Uprising
The Jewish-Roman historian Flavius Josephus recounts in his work 'The Jewish War' (c. 75 AD) an incident that stands as one of the rarest fart-induced mass catastrophes in history: during the Jewish Passover festival in Jerusalem, while the Temple was guarded by Roman soldiers, a soldier on the Temple wall turned his bare backside toward the assembled crowd and released a loud fart. The crowd, viewing this as an extreme insult, broke into riots. The uprising escalated — and Josephus reports thousands of deaths in the ensuing crush. It is the only documented case in world history where a fart directly led to a mass disaster.
The Bombardier Beetle: Nature's Chemical Warfare Engineer
The most compelling biological example of a fart as weapon is the bombardier beetle (Brachinus species). In its abdomen it carries two separate chemical reservoirs — hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide. When threatened, it mixes both in a reaction chamber where an explosive oxidation reaction takes place: temperature of up to 100°C, a loud bang, and a hot, corrosive spray — aimed precisely at the attacker. The beetle's abdomen is fitted with articulated discharge tubes that allow aiming in almost any direction. The beetle can fire this 'cannon' up to 500 times per second. Military engineers have studied the system — as inspiration for pulse propulsion systems and spray mechanisms.
Medieval Pictorial Propaganda and Fart Symbolism
In medieval and early modern pictorial propaganda, the fart was a powerful means of humiliation. Woodcuts and pamphlets from the Reformation era frequently show figures literally 'blowing up' the Pope, the devil, or political opponents, or silencing them with a fart. Lucas Cranach the Elder produced propagandistic broadsheets for Martin Luther in which a clergyman blows into the devil's backside — a symbol of submission to evil powers. These images were widely distributed and were a fixed component of political discourse.
Modern Interest: Biogas and Military Research
In the 21st century, military interest in biogas has taken a different quality: it is no longer about the fart as weapon but about methane and other biological gases as energy sources for remote military bases. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded programs researching biological gas producers — bacterial cultures — as potential fuel sources. In theory, a system that converts organic waste (including human excreta) into methane could provide self-sufficient energy for field camps.
