Farting and Scuba Diving: Gas Under Pressure

Beneath the waves, the simple act of passing gas becomes a fascinating lesson in physics. How does the gas trapped in a diver's intestines behave when the body sinks into the crushing pressure of the deep?

The Physics of Pressure

Scuba diving turns the human gut into a living laboratory for Boyle's Law, the seventeenth-century rule stating that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure around it. At the surface we live under roughly one atmosphere of pressure. For every ten meters a diver descends through seawater, another full atmosphere is added. At ten meters the surrounding pressure has doubled, so any pocket of gas, including the nitrogen, hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide swirling in the colon, is squeezed to half its original volume. Descend to thirty meters and that same bubble shrinks to a quarter of its size. The intestinal gas does not vanish; it is simply compressed into a smaller, denser pocket. This is the very same principle that forces divers to equalize their ears and to carefully manage the air in their lungs and buoyancy devices.

Can You Actually Fart Underwater?

Yes, divers can and do pass gas underwater, and the result is a small cluster of bubbles that wobble upward toward the surface. Because the gas is compressed at depth, a fart released at thirty meters is far smaller and less voluminous than the same volume of gas would be at the surface. Many divers report that passing gas feels different underwater: the wetsuit or drysuit presses against the body, the surrounding water resists the motion, and the sensation of release is muted. Inside a drysuit the gas has nowhere to escape and simply migrates around the suit, which divers jokingly describe as an unwelcome traveling companion. The escaping bubbles are harmless to the diver, though they may briefly amuse, or alarm, a nearby buddy.

Gas Expansion During Ascent

The real drama happens on the way back up. As a diver ascends, the surrounding pressure falls and the compressed intestinal gas obeys Boyle's Law in reverse, expanding to reclaim its original volume. Gas that was squeezed small at depth swells as the diver rises, which can produce noticeable bloating, cramping or an urgent need to pass gas in the final meters before surfacing. Counterintuitively, the most dramatic expansion occurs in the shallowest part of the ascent, between ten meters and the surface, where the relative change in pressure is greatest. This mirrors the cardinal rule of diving: never hold your breath while ascending, because trapped gas expands. A diver who feasted on beans or fizzy drinks beforehand may discover this lesson the uncomfortable way.

Safety, Myths and Diver Comfort

Despite the comic potential, farting underwater is entirely safe and cannot propel a diver forward, tear a wetsuit, or cause any injury, no matter how confident the stories told at the dive bar. The genuine concern is comfort: a belly full of expanding gas during ascent is unpleasant and distracting, so experienced divers simply avoid notoriously gassy foods such as beans, cabbage, onions and carbonated drinks in the hours before a dive. Letting gas out gradually rather than holding it in is the comfortable choice. Hyperbaric physicians note that trapped gas in the gut, like trapped gas in the ears, sinuses or lungs, follows the same physical laws, which is why digestive comfort is a quiet but genuine part of dive planning and post-dive wellbeing.
