Exercise and Flatulence: Why Running Triggers Farting
Anyone who runs regularly, cycles, or does yoga knows the phenomenon: physical activity can trigger or intensify flatulence — sometimes to the delight of fellow exercisers, usually to the embarrassment of the person involved. The causes are complex and range from mechanical bowel movement to hormonal metabolism to altered intestinal blood flow during exercise. The good news: in the long term, exercise is one of the best measures against chronic flatulence problems.
Why Running Produces the Most Gas
When running, the abdominal organs are rhythmically compressed and released by the vertical impact motion — researchers call this 'intestinal shaking'. This mechanical stimulation accelerates intestinal motility (peristalsis) and pushes bowel contents — including any existing gas — more quickly through the digestive tract. At the same time, larger amounts of air are swallowed due to more intense breathing during exercise, entering the intestines as nitrogen and oxygen. Studies show that moderate physical exertion can accelerate intestinal transit time by up to 30%. Among long-distance runners, 'Runner's Trots' — uncontrollable urge to defecate and flatulence during running — is such a widespread phenomenon that estimates suggest up to 50% of marathon runners experience it regularly.
Cycling, Yoga, and Strength Training: Different Gas Profiles
Different types of sport have different effects on intestinal gas production. Cycling in a bent body position can obstruct intestinal flow and trap gas — leading to discomfort in the second half of long rides. Yoga has the opposite reputation: certain poses (Pawanmuktasana, the 'wind-relieving pose', or Apanasana) are explicitly designed to mechanically push gas out of the intestines. Strength training significantly increases intra-abdominal pressure during straining — which explains the risk of involuntary gas releases during deadlifts or squats, well-documented by gym-goers. Swimming in a horizontal position reduces the gravitational effect on bowel contents and is considered a particularly flatulence-friendly sport.
The Hormonal Dimension: Exercise Changes Gut Hormone Production
Sport influences the gut not only mechanically but also through hormones. Intense physical exertion briefly raises cortisol levels and affects the enteric nervous system (the 'gut brain'). The gastrointestinal hormone motilin, which regulates intestinal peristalsis, is secreted more abundantly during physical activity. At the same time, intensive exercise redirects blood flow from the periphery to working muscles — at the expense of gut blood flow. This temporary intestinal ischemia (reduced blood supply) can irritate the gut lining and lead to increased gas production and accelerated emptying. This explains why particularly intense training (interval runs, competitions) triggers symptoms more strongly than relaxed jogging.
Long-Term Effect: Exercise Against Chronic Flatulence
Although exercise can acutely trigger flatulence, regular physical activity is one of the most effective long-term measures against chronic flatulence problems. Several randomized studies show that 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise three times per week leads to significant reduction in flatulence, abdominal pain, and symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The mechanism: regular exercise permanently improves intestinal motility, promotes the diversity of the gut microbiome, and reduces chronic stress — one of the main drivers of functional flatulence. Exercise is also a well-established first therapeutic approach for constipation as a cause of flatulence.

According to their own accounts, their mood during the run was barely affected — runners have apparently developed a pragmatic tolerance for bodily sounds.
